Autumnal Equinox: Equal length of days and equal length of nights

September 23, 2020 By Liza Leave a Comment

Dear Sunrise Walkers,

We are here at the door of the Autumnal Equinox: Equal length of days and equal length of nights. Amidst everything in the world right now, it might be difficult to take time to appreciate the changing of the seasons. The last couple of days I have been out at the Laguna to watch the sunrise. Because of some smoke, the sun is pink. This makes it very easy to look at for the first minutes. I feel from September 18-22 are all good days to celebrate the Equinox.

When I took out my compass (an app on my iPhone) I realized that the sun rises due east on the Equinox. Our solar system is 4 billion years old. (The universe 14 billion years old). It is amazing to think that the sun has been rising, on the Equinox for 4 billion years due East!!! There are so few things we can rely on these days, but you can rely on the rising of the sun.

Autumnal Equinox Ritual:  The sun rises at 7 am. It might crest over the Sonoma hills about 7:10 am. Take your coffee and your phone (with a compass) and look where the sun is coming up. Is the light coming from the East? As you line up with the Equinox Sun in the comfort of your home, you can possibly find a deep sense of the ancient light that is a part of you and a part of all of us. I hope this practice is as useful for you as it is for me.

The New Moon Ritual: Traditionally this is a time of planting new ideas and resetting your inner compass. This is a perfect time to reflect on what is emerging in your life. I hope you allow your self to reflect on new aspects of your self. Can you take time to journal, paint, or photograph something that is arising in you?

Some people say that the seeds of inspiration you plan in the new moon, this month in Virgo, will come to pass in the full moon of the same name. The next Virgo full moon will be in February 2021. However you see this passage of time, I hope you take time to journal your hopes, desires, and what might be so small it doesn’t even have words yet. As we move through this year and onto the next I will ask you if these new seeds of inspiration have come forth for you?
