“Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth.”― Hermann Hesse
This Equinox, I encourage you to find a tree that draws you. This tree could be in your home land, or in a local park or from your past. I like to call these trees the Mother Trees.
Suzanne Simard has helped identify something called a “Mother Tree.” Mother trees are the largest trees in forests that act as central hubs for vast below ground mycorrhizal networks. They support young trees or seedlings by infecting them with fungi and ferrying them the nutrients they need to grow.
Most people know that trees are important. They are older and bigger than us and they put our lives into perspective. Trees are rooted in the ground and reach up to the sky: they literally link the light of the sky and the darkness of the earth. This natural wisdom very healing to many people. Often people feel humility. These are symbols that teach us to be human.
This Equinox I would like to offer a practice of becoming friends with a tree. Finding a friendship with a tree is like finding a friendship with a dog.
This tree oracle practice is based on ancient Celtic wisdom. This oracle was passed down to me from Rupert sheldrake:
1) Find a tree that captures your heart, attention or imagination.
You will probably know one from your past, or one that is currently in your life.
2) Be quiet for a couple moments. And ask these questions.
Who am I in the South?
Where have I come from in the East?
Where am I going in the West?
And what is my medicine in the North?
3) Write in your journal the answers you got from the tree.
This practice is one first step in becoming friends with tress.Enjoy the uniqueness of each tree you meet!
